Historically, engineering has been a male-dominated field, shaped by decades of tradition and barriers that limited access for women. But today, that narrative is changing, especially as the world pivots toward clean energy.

The Energy Transition is not only redefining how we power our lives; it’s also reshaping who gets to lead that change. At the heart of this transformation lies engineering, offering young women a chance to build impactful careers, solve global challenges, and bring fresh perspectives to a sector that urgently needs them.

This field offers diverse roles, from designing wind turbines to innovating smart grids, all while promoting inclusivity and creativity. With growing demand for fresh perspectives, women can lead in shaping a greener future.

The UK is home to many leading engineering organisations that are contributing to the Energy Transition, and Berwick Partners has the privilege to partner with some of these businesses in attracting their future leadership talent.

From Rolls-Royce, who are developing small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), which are seen as a key part of the UK’s low-carbon energy future; to Jaguar Land Rover, who are investing £4 billion in a gigafactory in the UK to produce electric vehicle (EV) batteries; Johnson Matthey – the UK’s largest listed chemicals group, which specialises in sustainable technologies, including EV battery materials; Nissan – which has committed £2 billion to produce two new EV models in Sunderland; and BMW – which has invested £600 million to support EV production in the UK.

Meanwhile, energy technology giants, Siemens, GE, Schneider, Hitachi, EDF, BP, and Shell, all have a significant presence in the UK, providing thousands of jobs.

Whether they are British-owned enterprises, or subsidiaries of global groups, they offer significant employment opportunities for current and future generations of female engineers.

Engineering can empower young women to make a real difference, earn well, and break barriers in a field that urgently needs their talent and vision.

The future is theirs to build.
