The National Garden Scheme (NGS) raises substantial funds for nursing and heath charities by offering unique access to exceptional private gardens across England. Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Isles. The money is generated from garden admissions, refreshments and plant sales.
Founded in 1927, the National Garden Scheme is the most significant charitable funder of nursing in the UK, supporting beneficiaries such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Hospice UK, Carers Trust, and Parkinson's UK.
The Role:
We are seeking a visionary and dynamic Chief Executive Officer to lead the National Garden Scheme into its next chapter, particularly as we approach our centenary in 2027. The CEO will be responsible for the operational leadership of the organisation, working closely with the Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers, and key partners. This role requires a strategic thinker with exemplary ethical standards, financial acumen, and the ability to inspire and engage a wide range of stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide operational leadership within the governance framework established by the Board.
- Develop and deliver strategic plans to achieve the long-term aspirations and objectives of the organisation.
- Manage the team of staff at the head office and oversee approximately 600 volunteers.
- Foster positive relationships with key contributors, including volunteers, garden owners, and supporting partners.
- Develop and project the NGS public profile, fostering effective relations with supporters and beneficiaries.
- Ensure financial accountability and manage budgets effectively.
- Lead on policy development and supervise the charity’s activities.
- Travel as required for Board and other trustee meetings, regional AGMs, and events organised by county volunteers.
The Candidate:
We are looking for a high-calibre individual with a demonstrable track record of successful leadership, managing staff, finances, and volunteers.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Senior management experience, including business and major project development, fundraising, and people management.
- A proven ability to develop and deliver business strategies.
- Expertise in using media to promote a charity or related organisation.
- Strong strategic and analytical skills with the ability to translate strategies into achievable goals.
- Excellent influencing, negotiating, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Enthusiasm for gardens is essential.
