Director of Finance – The Goldsmiths’ Company – London – Competitive Salary

The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths more commonly known as The Goldsmiths' Company, is one of the Twelve Great Livery Companies of the City of London and received its first royal charter in 1327. The purpose of The Goldsmiths' Company is to contribute to national life by supporting craftspeople, protecting consumers and working with charitable partners to help people improve their lives.

The Company is looking for an excellent Director of Finance to lead on all financial matters as the company heads towards its 700-year anniversary in 2027.

The Role

The Director of Finance is the Chief Financial Officer of The Goldsmiths’ Company. Reporting to the Clerk (CEO), they are responsible for the executive lead on all finance and investment matters and accountable to the Court. They act as principal strategic adviser on finance to the Clerk (CEO) and the Wardens (board).

The Director of Finance leads the Finance Department and is responsible for the department’s work, including Statutory Accounts, Budgets, Management Accounts and overseeing the Company’s and Charity’s investments. The Director manages a current team of seven, covering functions of Financial Reporting, Financial Accounting, Payroll and Credit Control.

The Candidate

The candidate will be an experienced finance leader. They will operate in a calm, assured, and professional manner. They will be comfortable in the detail when addressing complexity but also able to simplify accounting matters for the broad array of stakeholders associated with the role. Specifically, candidates must demonstrate:

Experience

  • Substantial experience of leading a finance department and team and working within a senior leadership group
  • Significant experience of financial strategy and governance
  • Strong understanding of investment management
  • Substantial commercial background

 Skills

  • Excellent analytic, problem-solving, strategic and critical thinking skills
  • High level team leadership and management skills
  • Expertise in financial and accountancy software and applications
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to prioritise effectively while working on multiple projects
