UK Manufacturing Executives Dinner | June 2025
Last week, Colin Roope of Berwick Partners and Alex Lambert of Odgers had the pleasure of hosting a dinner for senior leaders from across the Midlands manufacturing community. They were also joined by Omar Mirza of Alvarez & Marsal, guest speaker for the evening, who shared a timely perspective on the current industrial landscape in the UK and beyond.
The evening featured a broad ranging discussion, with attendees sharing their own insights and experiences. The overarching mood was one of cautious optimism. Despite the well documented challenges across sectors for manufacturing companies, there is clearly a strong sense that organisations are adapting, evolving and increasingly in some areas, gaining momentum.
A few key themes emerged:
Consolidation & Pricing
Many sectors remain fragmented and this is creating space for strategic consolidation, with valuations now at levels that are attracting both trade and private equity interest. Sectors like aerospace & defence, MedTech, engineered products, and advanced manufacturing are seeing the most activity.
Customer Diversification
Many businesses are actively broadening their customer base – both to reduce risk and to unlock growth in new markets. This includes moving into adjacent sectors, expanding internationally and rethinking supply chain partnerships.
Near-shoring & Supply Chain Resilience
The shift toward near-shoring continues to gather pace. Manufacturers are looking for greater control and reliability, and that’s driving demand for trusted, local suppliers, particularly here in the Midlands, where the industrial base remains strong.
Access to Capital
Despite macroeconomic uncertainty, capital is available beyond UK funds. Investors from the US, Europe and increasingly from Asia are seeking investment into UK manufacturing – especially where there’s a clear growth story, strong leadership and a credible plan for scaling.
And underpinning all of this is talent. Whether it’s navigating transformation, driving innovation, or preparing for succession, leadership capability remains the critical enabler. It’s a recurring theme in every conversation we have.
Thanks again to all who joined us for an evening of open dialogue and shared perspective. We look forward to continuing the conversation.
