Technology in Healthcare

Berwick Partners and Odgers Berndtson recently held a lively and informative networking event to address the theme of ‘Technology in Healthcare – What the Future Holds’. This was a speaker-led event for senior leaders from the North’s Healthcare and Technology leadership community.

Leeds’ Malmaison Hotel hosted a diverse crowd of senior leaders from a range of healthcare providers, commissioning organisations, established health-tech vendors, and start-ups, as well as members of the region’s political community. The event was opened by SJ Leatherdale, Healthcare Partner from Odgers Interim, who introduced our speaker Parker Moss.

Parker is a technology strategist who has previously held executive roles in the telecom industry. He moved into the health sector after his daughter was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, taking up roles as Head of Digital Strategy & Transformation at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Care.

The insightful and moving presentation addressed a range of themes, including the use of AI in Pathology, the future of GP services in the UK and the need to build closer ties between the Life Science sector and the health system.

Parker’s presentation closed with a Q&A session, chaired by Odgers Berndtson Healthcare Partner, Peter Mason. An engaged crowd debated a wide range of subjects: the differences in UK/US attitudes to start-up investment, the potential application (or not) of analytics in disease prevention, and the influence of social status on participation in clinical studies. Much of the discussion centred on the power of patient data as an asset, and the value of the US model of implied consent for clinical data sharing.

Whilst many questions remained to be addressed, the evening was closed by Alex Richardson, Principal Consultant in Berwick Partners’ IT & Digital Leadership Practice stating, “the role for tech in the future delivery of services is unequivocal and Leeds’s uniquely cohesive healthcare economy will certainly continue to shape the future of healthtech”.
