In a world where environmental consciousness and corporate responsibility are more crucial than ever, leaders like Lucas van der Schalk are at the forefront of driving change. As the CEO of Corplex, a company dedicated to sustainable practices and supporting the circular economy, we spoke to Lucas who offered his unique perspective on the evolving landscape of sustainable packaging solutions, his career journey, and his leadership principles.

A Career Defined by Social  Impact

With 32 years of experience spanning various industries and continents, Lucas’s career trajectory is nothing short of special. From designing life-saving products in the automotive sector to shaping the purpose-driven initiatives in the packaging industry, Lucas’s journey reflects a blend of expertise and passion for making a positive impact on society. His roles in companies like DS Smith and Corplex have not only honed his operational and commercial acumen, but enforced his commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Shaping a Purpose-Driven Business

Upon joining Corplex as CEO, Lucas was drawn to the opportunity to lead a global business with a clear purpose—reducing carbon footprint and creating a positive impact on the world. His tenure at Corplex has been marked by challenges and successes, with a strong focus on sustainability at the core of the company’s operations. Lucas’s vision aligns with the ‘blue ocean’ philosophy, where innovative solutions address unmet customer needs while advancing sustainability goals.

As an example, Lucas explains ‘flowers are often transported from Holland to the UK in cardboard boxes that typically have 7 uses. Our plastic solutions, whilst more expensive initially, can last for a substantial amount of time so despite the initial outlay, the overall packaging spend reduced and the benefits of carbon footprint reduction are exponential.’ Despite many challenges, their successful transition from traditional packaging to these reusable solutions underscores their commitment to driving meaningful change.

Navigating the Sustainable Packaging Market

As the sustainable packaging market undergoes a transformative shift towards waste elimination and material reuse, Lucas emphasises the importance of innovation and legislative support in driving this evolution. Lucas’s strategic approach to balancing profit with purpose underscores his commitment to sustainability and forward-thinking leadership. For example, by converting materials into reusable products and exploring bio-polymers with minimal carbon footprints, Corplex is at the forefront of pioneering sustainable solutions.

The Essence of Effective Leadership

Lucas’s leadership philosophy is rooted in inclusivity, effective communication, empathy, and adaptability. By fostering a culture of openness, vulnerability, and alignment with core values, he exemplifies the qualities of a true leader. His Arsenal fandom adds a touch of humour and relatability, highlighting the importance of showing vulnerability and connecting with others on a human level.

For aspiring CEOs, Lucas’s advice is clear: ‘Be ambitious. This role requires introspection, vulnerability, and the ability to work through others. Be a role model for high moral and professional standards. Stay present, visible, and open. Finding a way to connect with customers and all levels of your organisation is important.  Having excellent business skills is taken as a given.’

Paving the Way for a Sustainable Future

Through his commitment to reducing carbon footprints, driving circular economies, and advocating for sustainable practices, Lucas is not only shaping the future of the packaging industry but also setting a precedent for responsible leadership in a rapidly changing world. As we navigate towards a more sustainable future, leaders like Lucas inspire us to embrace sustainability as not just a business imperative, but a moral obligation to safeguard our planet for future generations.
